Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos & Lee Konitz + Ohad Talmor
CULTURGEST, LISBON

For Porto 2001, Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos (OJM) commissioned works to several Portuguese composers. With the desire of extending these commissions to foreign composers, the OJM invited Lee Konitz, one of the Jazz’s living legends and one of the most unique saxophone alto players of all time. He has studied and recorded with Lennie Tristano and was part of Miles Davis Birth Cool Nonet. The invitation was accepted and Lee Konitz composed all the pieces performed in this concert, where he also features as lead soloist. Ohad Talmor will be in charge of the arrangements as well as the conduction. A saxophone player, arranger and composer, Talmod emerged in the New York scene around 1995. Since that time, he has played with outstanding musicians such as Steve Swallow, Dave Douglas, Chris Potter, Jim Black and Carla Bley. One of the highlights of his collaborative work with Konitz are the arrangements he made for the Lee Konitz New Nonet. OJM plans to release this joint body of work in an album, which will constitute a testimony of this ambitious adventure.
